Ultra-Processed Foods and Beverages: Harmful to Health and the Environment

Although they are useful for managing the growing global food demand and reducing malnutrition, the increased production and consumption of ultra-processed foods and beverages (UPFDs) have negative effects on health and the environment. This was revealed in a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Why?

On an environmental level, the quantity of UPFD consumption, their degree of processing, and their packaging contribute to environmental pollution, except for the soil, which is not affected.

On the health front, it has been confirmed that high consumption of sugar or artificially sweetened beverages, of which UPFDs are primarily composed, is strongly associated with a higher risk of mortality.
