Swedish Cloths and Sponges: How to Choose Them

At the bulk detergent store, they were offering biodegradable gadgets, and among them, what caught my attention was the “Swedish cloth,” which I often use but hadn’t fully understood its properties.

First and foremost, it’s a 100% biodegradable and environmentally friendly cloth made from natural fibers: when it degrades, you can dispose of it in the compost! I also discovered that it can be used not only for cleaning household surfaces (I use it to dust furniture) but also as a sponge for washing dishes.

In this regard, a laboratory study quantified the number of microbes present in a typical “sponge” used for dishwashing and cleaning countertops. It revealed an astounding number of approximately 54 billion bacteria in just one cubic centimeter! So, let’s learn to use Swedish cloths: they have a shorter lifespan and thus accumulate fewer microbes. They are biodegradable, eco-friendly, and can be composted.
