Hypertension: cause uncovered and a remedy found

Researchers from Queen Mary University in London and Barts Hospital have pinpointed a genetic variant responsible for a common type of hypertension (high blood pressure) and have also discovered a treatment method.

The culprit is a tiny benign nodule, found in one out of every twenty individuals with hypertension, that produces a hormone known as aldosterone, which regulates the body’s salt levels.

This form of hypertension can potentially be cured through a procedure called unilateral adrenalectomy, involving the removal of one of the two adrenal glands. Following the removal, hypertension vanishes, requiring no further treatment for many years of subsequent observation.
